It’s common knowledge that all the ‘T-series’ phone from OnePlus have been evolutionary phones. The OnePlus 3T was an evolution of OnePlus 3, and the OnePlus 5T played the same role for the OnePlus 5. But OnePlus 6T, which launches this month on October 30, deviates a bit from the said formula, possibly in the right way. It is going to come with a couple of new features that may make it a bigger update than the usual T phone from OnePlus.
So what are these updates that have already created a lot of buzz around the device? On October 10, when Amazon India opened pre-booking for the OnePlus 6T, it found many takers. A day later, the company revealed that it had a done a business of 400 crores in a matter of 36 hours as far as the OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T were concerned.
“When compared with Amazon.in’s Great Indian Festival last year, bookings of OnePlus smartphones during the period have grown 5X this year on Amazon.in. Within 36 hours, the brand witnessed over Rs 400 crores worth of smartphone bookings which include this year’s flagship, the OnePlus 6, and pre-bookings for their upcoming device, the OnePlus 6T. 5 months since its launch in May, OnePlus 6 remains the highest grossing and best-selling premium smartphone ever on Amazon.in,” said an Amazon spokesperson.
In the past, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau and OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei had said that the company would make a T-series phone whenever it believed it could bring new technologies to its users. One of the newest technologies that the OnePlus 6T brings to OnePlus users is the waterdrop notch. In the past, we, here at India Today Tech, had written about how the notch on the OnePlus 6 was the best notch because users could hide it or customise it in ways that was not even possible on the iPhone X. Now, it seems that this notch is going to get tinier in the OnePlus 6T. It will look like a very small waterdrop, and will house a camera in it. Possibly, it is going to be so small that you may not even notice it after a day or so of using the 6T. And given that the notch is getting smaller, OnePlus 6T is likely to come with a screen that is going to be bigger with its size being something around 6.4-inches.
In-display fingerprint sensor
This is the second big — and new — technology that OnePlus 6T is going to come with. Earlier, OnePlus had confirmed that the OnePlus 6T will feature the futuristic fingerprint sensor that will be embedded inside the screen. It will light up when needed, and won’t be visible when it is not required. Reports say that it is going to be an optical fingerprint sensor. Now, there have been couple of phones that already have this in-display fingerprint sensor. But OnePlus says that its implementation is going to be the fastest. “We spent months shaving milliseconds off the unlock time and carefully refining the unlock animation to ensure a satisfying experience… we have created an incredibly fast in-display unlock experience,” OnePlus CEO Lau recently wrote in the OnePlus community forum.
Bigger 3700 mAh battery
OnePlus 6T doesn’t come with the 3.5mm headphone jack. But apparently, removing the ‘old jack’ from the phone is going to allow OnePlus to put in a bigger battery inside the phone. OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 6T will come with a 3700 mAh battery, which means it is going to be a premium phone with one of the biggest batteries. A bigger battery should also translate in to a better battery life, and we expect OnePlus 6T to continue supporting fast charging, similar to how all the OnePlus phones have done so far.
One top feature of the OnePlus phones is just how fast they are. This is because of the top hardware and clean software combination. Expect the OnePlus 6T to continue the tradition. There will be the Snapdragon 845 processor in the phone, and that, along with up to 8GB RAM and up to 256GB internal storage, should help OnePlus 6T be one of the fastest phones in the market. In fact, in real use, OnePlus 6 is a phone that is as fast as the Google Pixel 3, which makes it one of the fastest Android phones. People expect the same from the OnePlus 6T.
Android 9 Pie and promise of updates
This, we believe, is the best part about the OnePlus 6 right now, and will be the star feature of the OnePlus 6T as well. OnePlus 6 is already running the stable version of Oxygen OS that has the Android 9 Pie as its base. In fact, when the OnePlus 6T launches in India, it will be only the seventh — OnePlus, Pixel 2, Pixel, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel XL and Nokia 7 Plus are other phones — phone with Android 9 Pie. It will be joined by Google Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL a few days later, but at the launch, OnePlus 6T will be THE first phone in India to come with the Android 9 Pie.
This saga of Android 9 Pie on OnePlus phones also demonstrates something else: the promise of fast updates. We have seen that phones like OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6 have always got quick and timely updates, including Android OS updates. And that should bode well for the OnePlus 6T, because in future, it is going to be one Android, unlike most other devices, that will likely get the relevant updates quick and fast
